Helping an Agawam Resident Recover from a Microsoft and IRS Impersonation Scam
A residential customer off River Road in Agawam encountered a frightening tech support scam after a warning appeared on their computer instructing them to call a phone number. The scammers posed as Microsoft support and even transferred the customer to someone impersonating an IRS representative. They gained remote access to the computer, accessed personal information, and changed passwords, leaving the customer locked out of their own system.
When I arrived, I investigated what had happened, identified and removed the scammers' remote access software, and checked for other ways they might reconnect. I also examined their activity to determine what information may have been exposed.
To secure the customer's accounts, I reset compromised passwords, reviewed recent sign-in activity for unfamiliar devices or suspicious access, and verified that account recovery email addresses and phone numbers hadn't been changed. I also enabled or confirmed multifactor authentication to provide additional protection.
After restoring the computer to working condition and helping the customer regain access to their accounts, I explained how the scam worked and what warning signs to watch for in the future. The customer was understandably shaken but relieved to have their computer working again and felt more confident about their online security.
